"Runner" - 2009

Materials: Stainless-steel, 23' x 18' x 1'-8
Location: Athletic Building, Indiana State University, Terre Haute, IN
Commissioning Agency: Art Spaces Inc. and Indiana State University

This monumental, dynamically posed, figure symbolizes the athletic activities taking place inside the new ISU Student Recreation Center. While the sculpture represents a generic, stylized runner, a nighttime lighting system casts the shadows of passing students onto the form—emphasizing everyone’s uniqueness in contrast to the standardized figure. The projected silhouettes animate the piece, extending its meaning and creating a compelling interplay between the artwork and its viewers.

Intentionally located to be partially hidden from the building’s interior, the sculpture gives the impression of a runner in motion, as if sprinting past the window.
