Materials: Engraved Stainless-steel – 28’ x 6’ x 5’
Location: Mozart Park, Boston, MA
Commissioning agencies: New England Foundation for the Arts and The Hyde Square Task Force
This sculpture is composed of five 8” x 8” stainless steel tubes which, when viewed from the park’s central axis, merge visually into the form of an outstretched, upward-reaching hand. The gesture represents the American immigrant journey—the aspiration to rise and achieve success. The design was inspired by the artist’s close engagement with the Hyde/Jackson Square community.
Each of the five uprights is engraved with quotations from local Hyde Square youth, sharing their personal experiences as immigrants or as children of recent immigrants.
The project was made possible through a grant to the Hyde Square Task Force from Art & Community Landscapes, a program of the New England Foundation for the Arts, which supported its planning, design, and construction.
