Cambridge River Festival, Cambridge, Massachusetts, September 1997
"Who are You? "
Who are You? ,an interactive artwork designed for the internet, was linked to a tent along the Charles River during the Cambridge River Festival. This artwork is reveals how its users see their bodies in comparison with others. Participants pick from a series of figure symbols and choose a category of body type they most resemble.
They can then read what others have written and add their own response. Each response becomes available for the following participants to see. The anonymous nature of the web allows for users to respond honestly and spend as much time as they like comparing their own ideas with others.
During the festival more than 100 people participated and added their responses to this work.
Who are You ?
is located on this site and continues to receive visits and comments from dozens of users each month.
The Cambridge Arts Council, sponsor of the annual Cambridge River Festival, arranged with Microsoft and Sidewalk.COM for a tent where three cyber artists were able to, using computer workstations, display their projects.
George Fifield organized this exhibition and curates the Cyber Arts Festival in Massachusetts.
