Work on the oval base that will support the two heads begins. The day before The artist

The footing trench, around the circumference of the sculpture base, is completed.
This will have a rings of rebar that will tie it in to the slab that it supports.
The footing, 1 foot 6 inches deep, and more than 80 feet long. ALL DUG BY HAND!

While not the most glamorous aspect of the process this proved to be the most interesting and important part of the construction of the sculpture base. If the footings and bolts were not located at exactly the right height
and location the sculpture would not sit correctly on the base. The footings for the sculpture were built and poured. Almost 8-1/2 cubic yards of concrete were went into the five individual footings. All are 2-1/2 feet deep, five feet long and 2 to 3 feet wide.

The forms were removed and the footings exposed. 6 inches of fill was spread and
compacted and the rebar reinforcing was laid out. Gerald directed and installed
the rebar with the help of Joe and the artist. The artist supplied some of the
the unskilled labor; moving the rebar, placing it in the cutter and cleaning up
the scraps. Once again I learned a lot from Gerald as he patiently explained the
details of how to install and lay it out. Its a pleasure to watch someone who takes
so much pride in his work.
