The
artwork Procrustes' Brain uses a video camera and computer
to capture images of exhibition visitors and morph them into the form
of a standard male or female icon. Television monitors display the transformations
and a copy of the result is printed for each participant. This piece was
first exhibited at the Museum of Science in Boston, MA as part of the
1999 Boston Cyberarts Festival.
The poetry and technology of the piece is quite dramatic as well as relevant
to today's issues of standardization and mass production. While today
we are more and more categorized as generic symbols this artwork addresses
the fact that they are less and less descriptive of how we look and define
ourselves.
This work would not have been possible without my friend Ed Tekeian. He
wrote all the software and always with good humor and a big smile. |
