June 21st 2005: Welding Works, near New Haven, CT:


Above: Mike forming a steel pipe to match the template. Full size paper templates were plotted at Welding Works based on drawings prepared by the artist. These were then rolled out on a large table and a hydraulic machine was used to form the "branch" from 3"; steel pipe. Each pipe required anywhere from 2 to 4 hours to form.
The tree is made up of 10 branches.The branches are to be welded to a base plate that will in turn be welded to a corresponding stainless steel plate attached to the foundation that was poured at the Clinton Avenue School in early June.
