For The Convergence International
Art Festival, 2000, in Providence, RI,
I have projected symbols of men and women on building walls throughout
the downtown area. These figures, based on the international symbols
for men and women, are in groups of three.
Each triad includes the standard
boy or girl symbol and two additional figures. These are stylistically
similar to the boy or girl symbol, but portray physical differences
that can be observed among people. In other words the standard symbols
will stand in comparison to symbols that more accurately describe the
general population.
As people move throughout the city they will see
various triads in different locations. As they see these groupings
they are faced with the question, "Who are you?" projected atop each
group.
As people consider this question, they will be encouraged to
see what they and others look like as compared to the figures on the
wall. They are likely to see that, while some people may resemble the
standard boy and girl figure, most do not and that the symbols
we use each day do not accurately represent the world around us.
