" Who are You? " - Providence, Rhode Island, 1996
Above: "Who are You?" , 8' x 104' x 1/4", plywood.
One woman, hopping off a huge Harley chopper came up to me and said: "It looks like all different kinds of people. That ones my boyfriend ( pointing to a figure that was large and rotund ). "What's this it all about?"<
"Hey that one looks like you!"
"Do the ones with the giant heads mean people who are full of themselves?"
"That one looks like your brother James."
"You fit right into that one.
People, without a word, walked up to different figures and like a funhouse mirror tried to position their bodies in a way that reflected the size and shape of the figures.
"Hey man, who are you?" ( I heard this remark just before I stenciled on the title. )
This piece entitled: Who are You? part of the Convergence IX outdoor sculpture exhibition, was chosen in open competition and awarded a cash grant to pay for its construction and installation. The 20 larger than life cutout figures will be on exhibition throughout the Summer. The figures are not meant to be viewed as discrete works; but rather to be viewed and compared with passing pedestrians. Individuals are part of the work as they are compared with the individual symbol figures. Each figure is cut out of a 4 x 8 foot sheet of plywood and attached to a chain link fence surrounding a parking lot in downtown Providence (corner of Fountain and Eddy).
