"Whirlwind" was proposed to the Denver RTD in 2001. A spiral design, 28 feet high and approximately 17 feet in diameter and made up of 130 laser-cut steel figures. The largest ones at the top were to be 4 feet high. The smallest at the bottom 18 inches. The figures symbolize the diversity of the RTD riders and students at the adjacent campus.

At the base of the sculpture are a series of concrete bollards arranged in a spiral for seating. These were to provide seating and attract commuters to the sculpture. The sculpture invited comparisons between the shapes of the steel figures and the those of the people waiting for the train. Each day different combinations of people would ensure "Whirlwind" would be a fresh experience each time it was viewed.
